Toshiba A35
Fine equipment! When will Blue Ray catch up? Next year maybe, doubtful; but for sure - more money for both equipment and media! The A-35 used side by side with my son’s Play Station 3 with Blue Ray matching Harry Potter media the A35 provides a superior picture and audio signal on our Sony (oops) 60″ HD TV & through our 7.1 Onkyo/Klipsch audio system. What else can be said other than “what a sad state of affairs!!!” Thanks a lot Warner Brothers. How about allowing the consumer to make the decision of which technology we want!

Customer Review: Interesting feature set, but terrible menus and abysmal warranty service. Bought this from Amazon for the upconversion and the front panel USB port media player. 70 days after purchase, it has started to fail, but I’ll try to be fair: The Good: -Excellent video quality in 1080p upconversion (to my LG LCD) and component, to my AV reciever -Neat feature: USB port in front will play many (not all) media file formats from my cheapie USB drives -Reasonably well packaged when shipped from Amazon -Codes available on virtually all universal remotes in my house worked great on the first or second try -Optical audio sounds great The Bad: -Completely non-intuitive menu set. I’ve seen better menus on $15 generic digital cameras. Possibly the worst I have ever seen.

I WAS able to get advanced features configured, but it took an hour and was not described at all in the manual. -Coaxial digital audio and Optical digital audio do not coexist well -Poorly vented enclosure…too thin, feet too low to allow airflow underneath…see below. -Failed after 70 days of ownership (front panel is blank, overheats mid-playback despite being all by itself on an open shelf) -ABYSMAL warranty support from Philips.

READ CAREFULLY: THE WARRANTY IS ONLY 90 DAYS, and even then, they expect YOU to pay for insured, priority return shipping BEFORE receiving the replacement unit. If you return it non-insured or non-priority, they will refuse to replace it. I may wait until the 90 day warranty is expired, just to take advantage of my credit card’s warranty extension service. I guess I should’ve expected this from a $59 DVD player, but I guess I was spoiled by my last $59 DVD player: an Apex that played any horrible disc I threw at it and lived for 5 years.

Customer Review: Love It. This is a great DVD. I love the USB capability. I have used it several times to play avi files I downloaded and it worked great. I have not used the up converting feature yet. Great price.

Customer Review: This Is Really 6 Top-Quality Players in One
I do not understand the negative reviews or the knocks this player gets for its price. The Oppo DV-980H is really 6 players in one: - top-notch upconverting DVD video player - audiophile quality SACD and CD player (through analog outputs and HDMI) - audiophile quality DVD-Audio player (through analog outputs and HDMI) - MP3/WMA player via discs or the USB port - hi-res image player via discs or the USB port - AVI/DiVx player via discs or USB Now if you only use this to watch DVD video, then yes, better values (with similar performance) are to be had elsewhere. But if you are looking for any 3 of the above features, this is a great value. The machine itself oozes class (except for the disc tray) and it operates lightning fast even when using the HDMI output. It even works through HDMI if the display is turned off - this is essential if all you feel like doing is listen to CDs, SACDs or DVD-Audios. To top it all, you get responsive customer service and firmware maintenance. I mean, what else can you reasonably expect for less then $170?

Customer Review: For Now Better Than Blu-Ray
Some reviewers are able to write a review of an electronic component based only its specifications. I have to live with it for awhile. I’ve used the Oppo DV-980H for several months now after having considered purchasing its big brother the DV-981HD and the several high-definition video formats. I’m extremely satisfied with my choice. While its video playback and upconversion capabilities do not exceed those of many HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players, regular DVD’s look excellent when outputted via HDMI my new Panasonic TH-42P700U plasma TV. The picture is so good, in fact, that I may never opt for a Blu-Ray player if downloading or streaming HD video becomes a viable option. I would be tempted, however by an Oppo Blu-Ray player (hint!). There are dozens of less-expensive upconverting DVD players on the market, but none so competently handles the Oppo’s broad range of audio and video protocols. I am especially impressed that the Oppo plays PAL DVD’s and SACD audio. When the cost Blu-Ray players and disks decline and their technology matures, my Oppo may be relegated to the bedroom, but for the forseeable future it sets the cost-effective standard for audio and video playback.
