Our test revealed that the Westinghouse TX-47F450S as average and that marks are based on picture quality. In fact most of its marks are within Goods, Very Goods and then some Fair. These are the marks since the picture quality isn’t that great. A co-judged of mine remarked that David Letterman looked washed out, color of a Caucasian acquired a pinkish color and we thought that the TV didn’t give much justice to the Return of the King DVD.

The image quality may suffer, but at least this set makes up lost ground on its audio. When I tested this for that low and quite sound, the TV has managed to upset my ears. When the volume is set to a comfortable level, somewhere a third level up, sounds from the TV are good on my ears as they sounded clear and okay. And expect loud to be louder on this TV.

Before when I need to heighten up the sound, all I need was a subwoofer. But certainly not today as this TX-47F450S takes audio to a whole new level. In fact of the nine high definitions TV sets that we scouted in April 2008, all of which are 46-to 47 inch sets, the scores for this TV is commendable and even better for a TV coming from its class.

Menus on this TV are almost flawless, save for some minor problems. Every option on the video menu is grayed out. The remedy is to exit out of the program settings and change the set-up to User mode. That way the options that you need will be available for you. Minor blips like that undercut some of its finer details like the user-friendly menu that’s easy on the eyes and recognizable icons.

Easy to access regular inputs are seen at the side of the TV, but no short-cuts for inputs for temporary hardware add-ons. If you pay attention to the overall view of this HDTV you will notice that it is almost identical to Westinghouse’s previous HDTV release.

Though the manual and the remote leave much to be desired, other aspects help make the TX-47450S a great choice. With the remote alone, you will notice that it is not comfortable to hold in your hand as you watch hours of television. The closely located buttons will means lots of errors when you are channel surfing or trying to go to a specific station. The design of the remote is also cluttered and it will be a while before you have accurately memorized where the important buttons are located.

The manual is almost unnecessary are you will find yourself online anyway looking for a printable copy that is better than the print out they included. The instructions were not very clear and some of the wording was too light to read at times. You may spend hours fumbling with the sheets as you attempt to understand just what was written to show you.

The Autosource automatically changes the setting when you connect a device. This is a great choice for you since this is cost-efficient. Though the Westinghouse TX-47F250S doesn’t match with the best, its average features and great sound makes it a good buy. Perfect if you don’t have a surround stereo sound system.

Customer Review: WORST TV I HAVE EVER OWNED!!!
This TV is a Showcase of horrific flaws in manufacturing and design! Where to begin… 1. The TV has vertical lines on both sides of the set 3-4 inches from edge. 2. There is also a vertical line that has showed up in the middle of the screen, that is ALWAYS visible and distracting while watching anything. 3. The HDMI input is CRAP! I have a PS3 (more than 1, and its not the PS3, it’s the TV that has the problem.) and I have to physically unplug and re-plug the hdmi cable at least 10 times, at most I’ve counted 32 times, just to get it to work. Westinghouse says its a problem with the HDCP, well its a BIG problem. However, they do not seem to think so, seeing how they refuse to fix it. 4.

The Component video inputs are also defective. They have a ghosting/rainbow effect when viewing any source over these inputs. 5. The remote control is also defective, or I should say the IR receiver on the TV. The remotes signal will only get through 30% of the time. And you end up having to press the same button 2-3 times, just to get it to change inputs. 6. Worst for last! I have addressed all these issues with Westinghouse, and the only way to have SOME of the above mentioned problems fixed is to pay, at my own expense, for the shipping of this TV across country. Which would cost me literally half of what I payed for the actual TV. It should also be mentioned that I have used only HIGH quality cables, Monster Cable 1000 Series, HDMI and Component. I also have been a Manager at Radioshack for years and have a lot of knowledge in the area of Home Theater. This TV has let me learn a wonderful lesson. NEVER CHEAP out on a TV. Save!!! to buy one of good quality, or don’t buy one at all!

Customer Review: My TV is awesome. First off I have to say that we did not buy this at Amazon. However we ended up paying exactly the same price, should have gone to Amazon. I bought this monitor the first week of February of 07, it arrived a few days later and I immediately put it on a TV stand in the living room where it resided for 7 months. I then wall mounted it using a peerless (SP850-S). The wall mount kit is perfect, it pans, tilts, swivels and telescopes. It is heavy duty and yet surprisingly thin. It Telescopes 10″ from the wall or lies flat at under 2″.

The TV is hooked up to an HDTV system running on a (nearly) silent PC using Beyond TV and Beyond Media. I have a media server in the basement collecting and distributing HDTV as well as SDTV and DVDs to all the HTPCs in the house. I run it at 1080p on the VGA input. The DVI input looks better, has less noise and is sharper, but for some reason the HTPC does not like the DVI output.

So I use VGA. It is hard to tell the difference between DVI and VGA most of the time, but you can tell sometimes. Even at that the picture is amazing, far sharper than my dads pioneer 50″ plasma and without that annoying glare to boot. The picture has been reliable and we have never had any problems with black levels or with ghosting (movement blur). I have played PC games in full 1080p on it without any problems.

The PC running the games was taxed a bit with that resolution, but the Westinghouse never faltered. It takes about 230-250 watts of power to run under normal circumstances. This does not seem to vary when the speakers are muted or the volume is turned down. Nor does it matter what the TV is playing. What does matter is the backlight levels. At 100 it takes 250 watts, at 50 (the lowest I have used it) it takes about 240) and if the screen is all black it takes only 230. When the TV goes to “sleep” meaning that it has no input on its current source and so it goes into power save mode, it takes only 3-4 watts of power. If you press the off button it takes <1 watt. I am noticing some dark banding lines when using the VGA, but I do not believe this is due to the monitor itself but rather to the video card of the PC since if I put a different PC on that same interface the lines go away. But the other PC is not running 1920×1080 (1080p) so it is hard to tell if the PC is really at fault. In the last 9 months the cost has dropped on this by $125 and a new model has come out with an integrated HDTV tuner.

Even knowing that I think this is the best HDTV purchase around right now, providing the best value while giving truely impressive HD performance. This is not to say it does not have its problems, it has a terrible remote control for example and a terrible on screen menu system. But hopefully you never have to use either of them other than setting up the TV. Also it does not look as good as some of the higher end HDTVs, but at half the cost of most of them I am willing to sacrifice a tiny bit of overall picture quality. You will not regret this purchase unless you get a DOA TV, in which case you might wish you had bought a different brand, I hear that Westinghouse is not the easiest company to deal with and I have noticed that many of the replacements seem as bad as those they replaced.

But from where I sit it is worth a shot since this HDTV is a serious contender for the best HDTV I have ever seen, and is a shoe in for the best I (or anyone I know) have ever owned.

Customer Review: Great TV for the Price
Pros: Great Color Accuracy, Multiple HDMI inputs, Nice Design and appearance Cons: Standard Def performance This is a great tv for the price. The color accuracy is great. The menu options for tweaking the picture are excellent. I have Direct TV HD service and a HD DVD player hooked up. The HD DVD picture quality at 1080p is outstanding. For under $1000 dollars this is a great value for the money.

Pros- Excellent price. Great picture. Lots of inputs. Good picture adjustments. Cons- Poor bass response, closed captioning doesn’t work with all sources, no PIP I have had this TV for about 3 weeks and absolutely love it. Despite it’s minor setbacks I have really enjoyed it. My goal was to consolidate my PC and AV setups into one. I have heard that using PCs on plasmas can cause burn in so I opted for an LCD. I wasn’t looking for a very large display so I opted for a 37″-42″. I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

I checked out other reviews and the Westinghouse caught my eye. It didn’t rate extremely well in Consumer Reports, but I don’t put a lot of stock in just one review. I found other people who were very satisfied and decided to go with the Westinghouse 42″. I have Comcast HD service and the picture is phenomenal in HD. I also like the auto-adjust feature of the TV that tries to diplay the best picture size for the signal currently being viewed.

I had heard of problems attaching PCs to TVs but I have had no such problem. Now I DO have a Dell XPS 720C with Dual NVIDIA 8800 Ultra video cards so I can easily display the TVs native resolution of 1920 x 1080. Your PC probably won’t go that high, but I have tried other resolutions that work nearly as well. I’ve been playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on it and it looks spectacular. I will have to see how the TV fairs in the long haul, but so far I couldn’t be much happier, especially at less than $1,000.

Customer Review: Great Purchase
I got this T.V. a few weeks ago. Paid $1050 for it and it is a great set. The 1080p is good. The only thing I do not like about it but it doesn’t make a difference is the SD Quality. I got it for PS3 games and Blu-Ray that are 1080p not in SD. I would recommend this set for anyone that is on a budget and wants a decent LCD.

Customer Review: A piece of garbage.
I really wanted this set to work. It was the right price and had all the right specs… on paper. In practice, I was only able to get a good picture from an HDMI input. Over a period of 45 days the set would not play a 480p signal from any source or input without dropping sync every 20 or 30 seconds. PC display was pale and had diagonal waves that travelled across the panel. The subwoofer and advanced audio items on the menu were grayed out and would not work; tech support told me this model didn’t have those items installed (!?!?!?). I refuse to play ping-pong with multiple 47″ sets in hopes that I actually get one that works. I returned this set to B/B and bought the 46″ Sony Bravia that I should have. I haven’t looked back since. Bottom line is: There are far better choices in this price range.
