What I got disappointed about

When I try to input title names, this unit doesn't make me save it. I use same words again and again to make titles so this is really important function to me. Panasonic older DVD recorders had this function but newer model doesn't have it.
Moreover, you just cannot move cursor on the letters using remote when you input titles. If you did, it erases all letters when you try cursor to move left. This is absurdest, most ridiculous function I have ever encountered.
I will probably never buy Panasonic DVD recorders again. |
2 things that annoy me the most

I bought this as a replacement for a dead vcr to record tv shows, thats it, not as the centerpiece in my HT so I am happy with it, get the ram discs, you need them to use all the cool bells n whistles with this unit.
now the two things that annoy me
1. it jams and the only way to get it out is to unplug it, then you have to reset all programs
2. this bothers me more than #1, the power off button is over the disc tray and the eject button is over the display, I'm used to it now but for the first few weeks I kept turning off the unit when I wanted to eject the disc, as you already read, off and on takes some time. just bad design choices. I still do it every now and then.
don't forget, this is the tunerless unit. |
Pretty good DVD recorder at a reasonable price

| It seems hard to find a quality DVD recorder these days. This Toshiba unit is fairly intuitive in its operation. One thing I noticed that is strangely unwieldy is how you title a program. My old recorder simply displayed the alphabet across the screen and you moved up/down and left/right to select each letter. This one is much more complicated and time-consuming. But it does a good job of editing, which was one of the features I was looking for. Like all recorders, it is particular about the brand of DVD disc you use, so be sure you consult the manual before buying discs. |
Buggy internal software, ultra slow boot, broke after 1 year

I didn't like the kloogyness of this unit from the start and should have returned it before it was too late. Disappointing, too, because I've always had great luck with Panasonic electronics until now.
Here's what you need to know:
1. Totally busted after 1 year - will recognize no DVDs at all.
2. ULTRA slow boot / read / response times. When I hit the eject tray button on the dvd player, the dvd player should eject the dvd. Now. Not tomorrow, not after breakfast, now. Instead, it waits until it can finish God knows whatever operation it's trying to perform on the dvd, and then, maybe, it opens. And it has no manual tray open switch, so you will wait if it wants you to.
3. Very buggy OS - when you choose any options like turning on subtitles, you lose the sound from the DVD. As if part of a weird scheme to drive you crazy, it turns out if you press fast forward for a moment and then play again, the sound returns. Same deal if you press pause: no sound when you hit play, but you can use the workaround. Fun!
Wouldn't you like to spend $150 to play games with your DVD player from the start and then have it die completely after 1 year? |

| I was pleased with how quickly the product was delivered and the quality of the product as a whole. It fit our needs completely. I'd shop there again. |
